After
HEAVEN SHALL BURN had catapulted themselves into
the first row of the German metalcore-scene with their Whatever
It May Take- CD (released in 2002), one could wonder
onto the successor. Could the band hold the high level, into which
direction would the musical style develop, which effects will
the signing to Century Media have?
Well, Echoes, the Intro of Antigone,
makes one listen attentively. A wonderful melody played by some
strings, provided with a background piano and some soft samples.
The first moment of getting goose-flesh.
The piano disappears, the title number changes to “2”,
and the war begins. The Weapon Their Fear is an aggressive
midtemp-banger, intermittent interrupted by faster parts and melodic
moments.
Immediately one notices the powerful, clean production, the high
amount of melodies, the reduced speed and the developed style
of “singing”. Marcus Bischoffs' voice has moved towards
a more melodic one, without losing aggression. Excellent!
The Only Truth is a hard double- bass bomb, developping
itself into an atmospheric song, with a voice always beeing on
the narrow ridge between screaming, roaring and singing. A real
monster.
Architects Of The Apocalypse begins with Fear Factory-
similar guitars, only in order to change into a Swedish, almost
classic metal-riff.
Voice Of The Voiceless starts something foreseeably,
again with harmonies reminding of In Flames - hard as the previous
songs, but, however, not so outstanding.
On
the other hand, Numbing The Pain creates a new standard
in hard music. This song seems to be the first metalcore- ballad
that I've ever heard up to now. Slow, melancholic, almost depressiv,
but never trashy, with mighty guitars, that shed tears full of
minor harmonies to pull one down to where no hope is. The piano
starting at the end of the song underlines the class of a song
which one could not expect. Something like that is written only
once in a lifetime.. Metalcore has never been that kind of emotional,
stirring and beautyful. Incomprehensible!
After beeing hit back to reality by To Harvest The Storm,
one can rest a few moments while listening to the acoustic song
Risandi Von, that seems to be a continuation of the intro,
before Bleeding To Death unites all trademarks of HEAVEN
SHALL BURN again: Bone-breaking guitars, brutal drumming,
the prominent vocals - often aggressive, but also clean and harmonious,
and again and again these catchy melodies...
In case of missing hectic aggression, you'll be satisfied with
Tree Of Freedom, a loud and stormy song, with a slow
part in the middle and a fast end. Similar to Voice Of The
Voiceless, however, not so tingling as the rest.
Powerful and underlaid with a short sample, the final killer The
Dream Is Dead begins and takes no prisoners.
Once more Marcus gives everything, he has in fact become one of
the best vocalists in that kind of music.
A great farewell from Antigone, that
finds its end in the outro Deyjandi Von.
Antigone
must not hide behind the latest releases of the metalcore- superstars
Killswitch Engage and Hatebreed. Only two or three not so outstanding
- but still not bad - songs prevent me from giving ten points.
This cd is a masterpiece of modern, aggressive, dark and melodious
metal.
