On their second album Reclusion, Finnish band TOTAL DEVASTATION shows us how to combine hard, uncompromising Death Metal with strange elements, resulting in an explosive mixture. The base of the TOTAL DEVASTATION sound consists of brutal blastbeat attacks, thundering doublebass parts and hoarsing roaring vocals. This six-piece surely has made its Death Metal homework, because the songs are not boring at all, they come to the core quite fast and are note-worthy for their brutality. Now you may think: “Ok, but why should I pay attention to TOTAL DEVASTATION when hundreds of bands are offering the same?”. Well, the band was clever enough to avoid getting swallowed by todays Death Metal standarts by inserting electronic elements into the songs. It really seems as if many songs would sound quite different without such elements, especially when the band is putting the foot on the brake pedal, for example in Converted Illusions or Well Of The Dead. The songs receive a fucking morbid atmosphere, you simply can’t resist.
But also aside from the electronics, TOTAL DEVASTATION like to experiment with distorted screams, melodic influences or even with acoustic guitars. All this is perfectly supported by the production of Janne Saska, who created a cold, but yet organic sound.
TOTAL DEVASTATION are on the right way, and also if they won’t catch up with the pioneers of Death Metal, they are a absolutely recommendable band, equipped with enough courage for innovations, which won’t disappoint any fan of brutal Death Metal.
