This is a strange album made by strange people! The cover artwork is plain and simple – black symbol on a crimson background, info is rare and the band’s digital home strikes with a striking message and does not anything except a news blog and the email address.
Exist! consists exactly of only one song that runs over 32 minutes and owns the same name. That is nothing new, but most bands do not succeed witch such concept.
Exist! is difficult to describe musically. It is a blend of… of what actually? Doom, Black, Rock, Metal? All of them! Exist! is really darksome and angry in its emotions its spread, but does not freakin’ out musically. It is more a subtle way of anger. There are many instrumental passages to find, solos, great hooks, driving and groovy riffing (just listen to it at the 18 and 22 minute mark), funny guitar shreddings and together with the singing it soonest belongs into the rock’n’roll black metal-like drawer. On there other side, there are also quiet, melancholically sad and spherical moments to find, giving your mind time and room for thoughts. Short downtimes define the single parts that would have been normal songs. Do not ask me why they have chosen this conceptual construction. Exist! as a normal full-length with… dunno… 12 songs would have done it likewise good.
About THE SYRE there is not much to say. Hailing from Quebec, Canada, the solo project around Eric Syres exists since 1995 and is now grown up to a trio. Mr. Syres obviously likes to provoke and polarize with word games and lyrics and Exist! seems to be his third record. Besides, no information is available.
Regarding the lyrical content Exist! got dedicated to late Denis „Piggy“ D’Amour of Voivod fame and surprises with uncomfortable questions about life and being.
Interesting album that definitely offers a special kind of fascination. At least for me.
