A wonderfully strange piece of music blocks my player right now in permanent rotation:   Sorgsendömet Fobos from Swedish project TUSEN ÅR UNDER JORD.
And that’s all info given. No sheet, no website, no social media. There is absolutely nothing to find and learn what TUSEN ÅR UNDER JORD is about. They do so intentionally and that’s fine with me. So we can solely focus on the music.
And there I got immediately reminded of Godspeed You! Black Emperor. Not so much musically but from structures, mood and atmosphere. Although… if you would make Yanqui U.X.O sound that kind of old than I’m sure to hear parallels. But also Raison D'Etre have left their impact here.
Sorgsendömet Fobos is likewise captivating and disturbing, dark, fascinating as well as irresistible. Sounds waft gloomily as if that would be the soundtrack of a very old silent movie (e.g. the 1927 shot silent film The Fall Of The House Of Usher, would be the perfect match).
Sorgsendömet Fobos sounds like an old, dusty and brittle 78 rpm. It’s crackling and crunching all the time. Sometimes it wows and flutters, quite authentic, and sometimes it sounds as if the needle skips and repeats the phrase again and again. Also the compositions itself, simply titled part 1 up to part 6, could have be easily written 100 years ago.
This album is great, perfectly done. That is what makes so Sorgsendömet Fobos compelling. I’m really excited about this musical gem.
