Dedicated to Old School, continuously impetuous, on the surface one-dimensionally – and yet interesting sounds OBSCENITY’s new and eight effort Atrophied In Anguish.
What are the reasons for this impression? Short and very harmonious guitar solos, floating measure changes, some contained elements and a felicitous sound adds zest to the compositions. Voluminous, powerful but not exaggerated clear or modern, the tracks show up in organic and congenial sound vesture.
Apart from that, the refrains are not at all catchy or obtrusive, but they stay in my memory partly after the first listening. Some examples for this tactics are the opener Erase The Divine or From Heroic To Depraved. The grinding part of Swine To The Slaughter hits the auditory canals in quite elegant style and gets followed by a vivid guitar solo. For a bigger part, high speed reigns, sometimes loosened up through melodic leads and hardly noticeable changes in rhythm. I really appreciate this way of performing during the track Perfect Pain; a while later, the band integrates harmonious parts in effective way in course of Neurotic Frenzy. In contrast, the track Diary Of A Scapegoat is presented in hectic style because of the fast sung vocals, against what the album’s ending surprises with an emotional guitar performance.
This release’s overall impression is very forcible, but some melodic and playful nuances care for some light-bulb-moments. That’s the way it has to be: heavy and direct, but the band does not cudgel without sense and integrates agitating details, which keep the music interesting.
