Bassist LINUS KLAUSENITZER (Obscura, Thulcandra, among others) is a busy one and a master of his trade. However, the good man doesn't forge highly complex technical songs, but instead incorporates plenty of comprehensible parts, easily digestible grooves and hooks alongside fine fretboard acrobatics. Beautifully sparkling acoustic guitars delight metalheads in need of harmony before these quiet parts are chopped up by thrashy riffs. The [fretless] bass lines are interwoven organically and flash through again and again as a topping, but are not obtrusively in the foreground. There are many changes in time and tempo, but the ear canals never get tied up. Gentle passages and hard-hitting attacks balance each other dynamically and the band seems to feel comfortable at all speeds, because even an excursion into highly melodic, groovy realms (Our Soul Sets Sail) never drowns in kitsch or even suffers shipwreck, because there are always harder sounds on board. Easily digestible melodic death with ambition and depth or something... the two-part vocals (growls and clear timbre) also fit well into the picture here. Relaxed, trippy jam sequences convey an infinite lightness of progressiveness, and the frantic parts don't overwhelm the listener with top-heavy gravity.
On the one hand, the melodic component is never neglected, although complicated drums or rhythmic gimmicks ultimately challenge the listener's attention. For minutes, the music is purely instrumental, then grooves along with a jazzy looseness, picks up speed and offers flowing time changes.
On Tulpa, complex rhythms, gentle introversion and offensive attacks form a symbiosis - a challenging work to be heard and enjoyed carefully!
