Since I unfortunately
missed to write a review about the best Thrash Metal album of
the last year (the 10/10 chunk Time Is Up definitely
belongs to EVERY well-sorted household), I could not help but
write something about HAVOK’s new EP.
Point
Of No Return once again displays how alterable but self-assured
at the same time HAVOK operate. They never drift even one
millimeter from high class Thrash Metal. The title track and following
brand new one Cradle To The Grave remind strongly of Testament.
That was not a main influences on the band’s last full-length.
Nevertheless one immediately recognizes that it only can be HAVOK,
due to its characteristic singing, but also due to the razor-sharp
leads. Musically these both new tracks do not belong to HAVOKs
strongest material (not only because of its reduced pace) but
are absolutely worth listening to.
Additionally
Point Of No Return offers two cover versions, to
date only available on iTunes, namely Arise (Sepultura)
and Postmortem/Raining Blood (Slayer), whereas both get
almost exactly replayed. I do not really figure the meaning of
this special offer, on the other hand… I already have heard
worse cover versions. At least drummer Pete Webber can now show
why he is one of the best new drummers in Thrash Metal, in my
opinion.
All in all
this EP is for sure a nice thing for the ones who loves to complete
their collections. Those of you who saw HAVOK playing on
their just finished European tour and have seen how hungrily this
band acts live on stage can surely understand my anticipation
for the next regular HAVOK full-length.
