Well, it’s kind of bitter to see such a great band like GREED, in spite of now having a label in the back, still pedal in place. And they definitely have deserved much more. Knowing GREED since their Fractured days they entered my all time faves and I constantly keep an eye on their carrier. So it doesn’t wonder that their newest output One Of Seven has found its way into my CD shelf too.
This album in hand is now after the already mentioned Fractured and their EP Post / Human the band’s third effort and at the same time their label debut.
In musical terms a few things have changed but nothing drastically. These fab fours still ranges between Machine Head, old Fear Factory, Pantera and Korn. NuCoreThrash would be a nice word for what the guys have manufactured here. On One Of Seven they have gained much more of aggressiveness and heaviness at the expense of some “melodic” elements you could find on earlier releases. But it doesn’t wonder if you read the lyrics. All bad days and experiences got worked up, no matter if inside the band and around or from private life. Singer and songwriter David John Brian balances accounts with everybody and everything and gets fiercely supported by his mates. Though One Of Seven is kind of conglomeration of old an new songs. So you will find tracks like Shockwave and Fractured (from Fractured album), as well as Know This and Post Human (from Post / Human EP) on this record. Of course all of them adapted to the more aggressive style. All new tracks are ass kicking as fuck, no downer on this CD. Partly brutal (
With Both Legs Broken, One Of Seven), then groovy (In Shadows, Incarcerated) and fast (Using Your Gift), everything gets thrashed to dust, no prisoners taken.
Although this album is much varied, now and then some riffs and themes seem to be repeated or at least sound very similar. And over the entire length of this album you are willing at times to listen to anything else. In my opinion the older tracks could have been laid aside. That would have made One Of Seven .. um … crispier. Next thing I would like to nag about is the nearness to the band’s paragons you can hear out at times more than clear. GREED should start to loosen from them. I know it’s easier to say than to realize, especially when you are following these paths for years.
Nevertheless One Of Seven is a fucking great and tight album and should please a large amount of fans because of its wide musical spectrum. And live the guys are above of any reproach anyway. Buy this record and die!!!
