Finally!!! After more than 2 years Erik and Matte Andersson give us the long expected follow-up to their grandiose exceptional album Resurrection. No doubt, on this day I was bothering my dealer to get Way Beyond into my fingers. Of course ...
Well, with Way Beyond the mates follow smoothly in the footsteps of the previous album. Directly the opener Final Journey is a typical over 8 minutes running GODGORY song which gives you the creeps. A real treat for ears and soul. Powerful riffing and dead sad melodies. Also Another Day and Tear It Down are great tracks, even if the guys set to work out significantly quieter passages, but without losing the typical song structures. Sea Of Dreams is a pure instrumental part, admittedly not really an highlight. More like a nice candy for the gap between the songs. An awesome closing you get with Holy War. An absolutely mastersong with the greatness of Resurrection.
Remarkable is the fact that the keyboards are more in the foreground than ever before. The reason for that may be that Erik has exchanged his drums for keyboards. Then likewise the drums went back more to the background. However. Unfortunately, the whole album can't keep that high level like the mentioned songs above. Way Beyond is way quieter than the albums before, that is not really a drawback, but GODGORY are copying themselves too often. There is no further development, at least I didn't notice any. So that takes the hypnotic attraction and charisma away the previous album Resurrection still had. Well, the tracks are still catchy, intensive and emotional, but you will miss the "je ne sais quoi".
GODGORY are still a duo consisting of the Andersson brothers, even if the session musicians are nearly the same. You also can't see GODGORY on any stage around and that is a shame!!! Extremely!!! I hope that some things will change in the future in this way. Because due to the long musical absence, the lads have to start nearly from the beginning again and I'm not sure, if that is the best. What the guys been up to in the last 2 years, I will ask them ... watch out for the upcoming interview!
