Anybody remember GOD LIVES UNDERWATER, one of the biggest hopes in the universe of average grunge-music? With the help of Rick Rubin they climbed the charts at the end of the 90s. But after their label broke and singer Dave Reilly got into trouble with drugs they disappeared. And now, with their new album they raise again Up Off The Floor. To make it short: It sounds like a mixture of former Soundgarden and Marylin Manson’s experiments with glam rock. Dirty guitar-sounds draw themselves through it like a red yarns and what’s more, sawing stakkato-riffs and awesome groovy hooklines with that 90s-grunge-touch. Let’s not forget the Reilly’s tortured vocals and the modern sequencer-beats. The Lyrics are more emotional than ever, the moderate speed spreads shivering darkness. Catchy, of course. But as fast as it drills into one’s left ear, as far it has left the right one. I was not able to make out one or more exceptions, even after several listening-sessions. Either it contains nothing but highlights or none, at all. Again, it’s a question of point of view.
