My first thought
upon hearing this first track of GJENFERDSEL's
I album is, they have a great guitar
tone and amazing production. This album is like Darkthrone but
with better riffs, less boring drums, and an amazing sound. Every
track on the album is headbang worthy, fist shaking, horn wielding
black metal! Track 3 Deathbound is already one of my
favorites, complete with fast grooving riffs moving into slower,
clean bits only to get fast again. An even better example of diversity
is track 4 Stolthet, blasting black metal with hints
of a death metal vibe with deeper growls, faster blasts, and more
grinding guitars. Upon hearing this album I immediately liked
it, simple because you can hear everything; most notably the bass
guitar. Every song off this album is not only catchy, but it is
more diverse than your standard Norwegian black metal album. But
the overall album is very well together. The only fault I would
have to say about I is the speed and time. Every song off the
album sounds like a simple 4/4 time signature, which is okay;
yet every song is a bit slower than what I would normally prefer.
However, overlooking this small fault, this debut album from Norway's
GJENFERDSEL is amazing. This is a band I would
keep my eyes on for the coming years.
