Epicloud
that is a super sonic space opera, an incredible and splendid
spectacle that completely leaves you stunned and overwhelmed.
You get blown away, sucked up and absorbed by the universe of
DEVIN TOWNSEND PROJECT. Epicloud is the cheery
and chirpy sequel to Ziltoid The Omniscient. Chirpy,
because Devin cannot do it anymore without Anneke van Giersbergen,
both are like Jack & Jill musically and spark such fun and
delight you can hear from every involved at every second on this
record.
Okay, I have to admit that those who expected… um…
something more serious and down-to-earth metal after the quadrilogy
will be deeply disappointed and rather stay away. Those who liked
Ziltoid will love Epicloud.
Epicloud is racy and wild; just listen to Lucky
Animals, the chaotic More! and the crushing Liberation.
It also offers the (well-intentioned) kitschiest ballad with Where
We Belong, goes gentle with Divine and closes with
the grandiose and epic Angel. But Devin does not do it
without brutal heaviness and Fear Factory like monster riffing
as Kingdom and the bombastic Grace prove.
Of course Epicloud seems to be completely overdone.
But that’s the way it has to be. That’s the proper
portion of madness that inheres in Devin, a craziness that offers
many a surprising details, that makes you laugh and sob at the
same time, which is charmingly suiting and does not get on nerves.
Yep, if you did not dig it yet, I love Ziltoid The Omniscient
and I love Epicloud. Splendid masterpiece!
