Name-dropping
is always a good think if you want to attract the attention of
a willing listener. Name-dropping is absolute bullshit and scares
an already averse listener. So it happened with God(s)eyze,
the sophomore of German band DRYROT, its info
tried to thrill me with names such as Machine Head, Sevendust
and Prong. Ok, the good times of Prong are over since Cleansing,
Sevendust has never been any good and Machine Head are just acceptable
since their turning away from their “Korn”-ism.
Anyway, with
the mentioned bands DRYROT has – thank
God – not that much to do. I especially got reminded of
old Sepultura (Arise-era) at the faster songs, which are way too
little, and newer Sepultura at the slower and “modern”
tracks, whereas it is clear, that the slower, groovier songs are
replaceable, since you can find New Metal, New Rock and some current
heavy Metalcore stuff a dime a dozen.
Attentively listening one will when DRYROT unpack
the bludgeon, accelerating as hell… then one will miss the
good ol’ Bay Area Thrash times…
At the end of the record a highlight manages to appear: More
Than I Should is more an alternative shaped track with lots
of pathos (it’s meant in a positive way!). Besides too much
average and replaceability reigns. Promo in metal isn’t
inevitably good; “back to the roots” would have done
a little better, as you can see at Machine Head.
