DRUDKH
have always been a bit hit and miss over the years. This being
DRUDKH's 9th studio album they are once again back to their
roots with the Slavonic black metal we are used by them. The lyrics
are in Ukrainian and each of the 4 full songs (plus an intro)
represent one season of the year. The absence of the folk elements
that were on Blood In Our Wells (arguably their
best album so far) are notable, it's pretty much straight forward
atmospheric black metal with a few acoustic breaks. The songs
are between 8 and 10 minutes long, which makes it easy to lose
yourself in the atmosphere. That said, the album doesn't stick.
There is not much memorable about it. In into one ear, out through
the other, so to speak. Easy listening DRUDKH, so to speak.
It has all the right ingredients - fast and furious guitars, solid
drum work, blast beats, Roman's angry shouts, smooth bass lines,
a clear sound and a few acoustic elements here and there. Nonetheless,
it feels a little bit too streamlined, as if they didn't put much
thought into this album. Don't get me wrong, Eternal Turn
Of The Wheel still a good album and well worth buying
if you like this kind of music. There is just not enough substance
to make Eternal Turn Of The Wheel stand out from
the current deluge of quality black metal outputs.
