Progressive
Metal is probably the only type of Metal which was never really
hyped but also never can be claimed dead. Ever again bands appear
that reach an enlightened crowd of music lovers with their complex
songs. One of those bands is DAY SIX from the Netherlands.
On their second record The Grand Design the 4 guys
celebrate an extraordinary atmosphere combined with complexity.
Music wise the pleased listener will be remembered on Rush, Dream
Theatre and Porcupine Tree when he is guided through the 9 songs.
In terms of lyrics, this record is based on one hand on space
and its phenomena and on the other hand on the creation of all
things. The songs guide you on a journey through space, impressively
surrounded by the music. Frequent shifts from the calm guitar
parts, underlaid by keyboard and organ sounds, to the harder or
more playful parts, thus making this music interesting and exciting.
One small negative point is unfortunately that these parts sometimes
become too much and thereby boring (Inside). Nevertheless,
you will never be bored by the voice of singer Robbie van Stiphout.
That is not supposed to say that the work the 4 youngster do on
their instruments is not sublime at any point of time. But especially
the voice carries a lot of the atmosphere and casts the listener
under its spell with its intensity and different varieties. Here
definitely a band stepped into the spotlight which will last in
the Prog Metal scene. One sample and suggestion is Castle Gandolfo
or 7th Sign.
