Before listening to one single note of Veil Of Remembrance, the cover artwork attracted my attention. It is painted in dark colours and creates a very atmospheric mood. It is he same with the music. The Swedes mix up a portion of black metal sounding old school with all kinds of spicy ingredients of other styles. Sometimes death- and thrash metal parts are used in the throughout fast compositions. So CRIMSON MOONLIGHT creates a mixture of old school black metal and modern sounds. Better said the speed attacks are loosened up by interspersed elements mentioned above so that the result is a CD of above average quality.
Also the voice lies in the intersection of mentioned styles, often the singer screeches like a trooper, but Simon Rosén is also able to rattle in Death Metal style. The guitar work is good, the melodies are often held in the background. So I had to listen to Veil Of Remembrance a few times to discern the details. The Echoes Of Thought (song 4) is striking well done, the speed is a little bit lower and this could convince me more than blasting all the time. Nevertheless I have to concede that the guys are really able to play fast without ending in total chaos. The acoustic breaks are fine like it is done in My Grief, My Remembrance – they provide for an atmospheric touch created without keyboards. There is also a doom part in The Cold Grip Of Terror. It may sound confused, but a central theme coheres the songs and makes them comprehensible.
The sound quality is better than the one on The Covenant Progress. All the lyrics are taken out of real life, they are well done and poetical dealing with pain and reflections on life. As a conclusion I have to say that there are only positive aspects about Veil Of Remembrance, but some outstanding songs are missing. Nowadays an album needs remarkable songs to tower above average majority.
