Iäh,
CADAVER, Necrosis...
Back in the good old days my mate Psycho gave me a tape with Carnage
and CADAVER on it (could this really have been
as long ago as 1991?), one of those bands, CADAVER,
was on Earache's then-sublabel Necrosis.
Some magazine
or other called this "Easy Listening Death Metal," which,
strange as it sounds, might be quite a good description. The whole
thing was reminiscent of Entombed (whose influences were quite
present in their music: Repulsion, Slayer, Autopsy), but CADAVER
were straighter and rocked with full
force.
Now it's 2004
AD, and some band breakups, name and lineup changes, and some
rather odd web-performances (customers could buy alibis for murder
off their website *groan* Was that supposed to be funny?) later,
the sound hasn't changed too much. Early nineties Death Metal,
with the flavor of early Swedish Death Metal bands and late eighties
Grind/Death sound, in the vein of Earache signings like Repulsion,
rules the day.
Right away,
the record charges straight on with only a minimum of breaks and
show-off speed changes. This straightness is well-supported by
a brilliant drummer who manages to make the songs his own. In
the guitar-department we are exposed to full-on amps, with some
melodic passages that liven things up. The vocals don't just grunt
around in a neanderthal's caves, but are rather reminiscent of
a zombie's rattling breath, which complements the music quite
well.
On the whole
the record is pretty entertaining, and yes, also quite "Easy
Listening," so that fans of the aforementioned sounds should
find the material worth their money. If only the band could refrain
from such silly internet-pranks and maybe come up with less intelligence-insulting
song-titles, they might even be taken seriously. As such only
7.5 points.
