Mute Boy Sad Girl starts with the title track and shows the direction of the whole record: an amazing soft, intense and warm guitar-song, sung with a soulful voice. AUTUMNBLAZE alias Markus B. and Schwadorf can keep this mood on the following eight tracks – I have seldom listened to a record with such a melancholic atmosphere without clichees.
The songs are not always quiet, I Never Felt Like This Before for example has also hard guitar parts. But the two musicians find the balance with the dominating acoustic guitar without campfire-romance.
There are also too many unconvential elements in the songs – The Nature Of Music for example surprises with groaning sounds in the background. Or Can’t Save Anyone: the song starts quiet with soft drums, but bursts out then with heavy guitars – the change between quiet and loud, soft and vehement is just great.
The music gains its soul from the expressive vocals of Markus B. – he sings his beautiful lyrics very sensitive, nearly caressing.
It’s not easy to narrow AUTUMNBLAZE down to a musical direction – you can hear a few influences of Cure or Muse sometimes, and the influence of Schwadorf (Empyirium) can also be heard. But the duo creates such a self-contained, nearly magical atmosphere, so that you can’t grip them that easy. They have also a Cure-Coverversion Cold on thisrecors, which is even more melancholic than the original.
Just great. This is music to listen to, the perfect record for the autumn.
