Founded back in 2002 under the name Suicide, this band from Suedstadt (near Vienna) soon turned from black metal into a more melodic direction. After some renamings and line up – changes, they put out their first demo now, and it's rather promising, yet capable for development. With very good and clear sound, they play those typical Viking Metal guitar riffs (just think of Nomans Land, and maybe they also know Thyrfing and the mighty Mithotyn). ASATHOR don't try to play thirty riffs in every track, but they always build the songs around one or two lead melodies. There’s absolutely no lack of atmosphere. The intro Val (beginning majestically, then getting rather cheerful) transports the listener to the met-soaked shores of Valhalla. From there, we get into the Battle On Bifrost, a catchy song with vocals moving between middle and lower register. I'm not sure about those lower vocals, they don't fit exactly perfect. Einzug In Valhalla goes into a similar direction, enriched by some melodic background vocals. The closing title track is also of the same style, including another cheerful drinking chorus. A little more musical independence should be recommended to the band; nevertheless Viking Metal fans should take their chance on this demo.
