After the
tragic loss of Dave Prichard in the early 90’s it almost
took a decade till ARMORED SAINT found themselves again,
their inner strength and creativity for the comeback album Revelation.
Another decade had to pass by for a follow up (beside various
best-of’s, DVD’s and compilations and the side jobs
of singer John Bush in Anthrax and Joey Vera in Fates Warning).
Arriving in 2010 La Raza sees the light of day,
an album title that is likewise unusual as literally characteristic
of what the band is about these days.
ARMORED SAINT departed another step from traditional metal
genre they are so known for on their previous releases. They still
got to rock, yes, but much more La Raza breathes
Californian attitudes of life. This record is a multicultural
mix of styles and sounds with a slightly progressive touch and
these distinctive tribal-like drumwork next to captivating guitars
and guitar solos. ARMORED SAINT kick asses with Left
Hook From Right Field and La Raza, relax with Chilled
and groove with Head On. But beside all the variety it
is the overwhelming enthusiasm, charm and delight in playing what
makes this record so intriguing.
Singer John Bush dominates the La Raza from the
first second up to the last one. The new style gives his singing
more room, emphasizes and supports his voice more than ever before.
To be fair, it also has to be said that this album would be half
that spectacular without John Bush’s voice. With any other
singer La Raza would be probably left unappreciated
in the huge mass of Classic Rock releases. And I’m sure
that this record is nothing an ARMORED SAINT fan would
have expected so far. I for sure do not care ;) I love this record
and for me it is THE summer album for 2010!
