What awaits us on the third album by the Polish band? The musicians don't seem to be in a hurry at all, because the first few minutes creep along at a slow-motion pace, living off sparse instrumentation and plenty of gloomy atmosphere. The intensity slowly increases, the outburst is imminent - and indeed the mood changes and the tempo picks up noticeably. At the beginning, a tender female voice uttered a few spoken words, but now the band remains largely pure instrumental, with only a few scraps of words and samples to be heard over the course of the 11-minute monster Inner Whispers. The next song, Spark, starts in a completely different way: a dark growl voice, groovy rhythms and later effective time changes set the tone here. These five minutes are a lot easier to digest, although there is a bit of complexity aside from the beautiful acoustic guitars. Subtle melodies and wafting sound effects form an alliance with blast beats, so that the music remains in a harmonious flow. However, the band also intersperses heavy symphonics and dissonant echoes, making it difficult to access their work. Some handy grooves show up briefly and form points of orientation in the otherwise rather arduous song structure. The finale No More Shall The Boulder Descend combines the bulkiness of the opener with a lively aggressiveness and thus pours the essence of the musical creation into sounds with dissonances, blast beats, complexity, background melodies and dark vibes - as if Mgła were experimenting with Doom and extensive timbres.
ABOVE AURORA are by no means suitable as background music, as their mostly expansive pieces oscillate between maelstrom-like riffs, tough doom and attacking parts.
