Distractive
Killusions – the third issue for Polish Symphonic Black
Metal band VESANIA around frontman Orion, best known as
the bassist for Behemoth. With this new album they raise the bar
high for their musical peers. They define new borders in brutal
but technically filed and perfectly played Black Metal combined
with symphonic but discreet keys and soundtrack-like samples.
Those going
to compare VESANIA with Dimmu Borgir are choosing the easy
way instead of really listening to the music - nevertheless I
am sure each Dimmu-Fan would like this record as well... VESANIA
is placed in the same genre and it is simply impossible to invent
music itself completely new in my opinion. They are in fact using
similar stylistics, but the sound created is a completely different
one! And by no means I would not call them a copy of the Norwegians.
Founded back in 1997, the debut album Firefrost Arcanum
(2003) was still sounding rough and reminding on Black Metal of
the 90s (e.g. Emperor). It was followed by God The Lux
(2005) on which the band was brilliant in modern and technical
sophisticated Black Metal. Distractive Killusions
as the latest issue of the Polish guys, also available as limited
digi-pack-version including two bonus tracks, is continually increasing
the musical progress of the band. Keyboards were always included
in VESANIA's music, but never pushy. While the keys of
the former records were sometimes dabbling alongside, it is really
audible that the guys have gotten more experience during the last
two years. The production is very complex and by that the band
creates a knotless and clear sound which seems close to sterile
in places. VESANIA became mature and they really do not
have to be afraid of being compared with any big names in their
genre. Constant good work, an incredible speed and brutal footwork
is done by drummer Daray, who also sways the sticks for Vader.
The vocals are fatter and sound more sonorous. They range between
voluminous Death Metal grunts, aggressively moaning and painful
Black Metal screechiness, and an insane laughter in the opening
track Narrenshyff. The accustomed fat guitar riffs are
sometimes staccato-like, sometimes melodic and sometimes they
are snorting out their displeasure in minatorial deep tones. You
probably will discover some new outstanding, melodic and very
soulful solos in the compositions as in Rage Of Reason
- by the way a song that will touch every metal head by heart
for sure, even if he is not a huge fan of Black Metal.
Already with
listening to third title Infinity Horizon it becomes clear
very quickly that the guys of VESANIA do not want to take
any prisoners by Distractive Killusions –
they came to kill! Slowest song of this album is named Hell
Is For Children. Slowly from behind it creeps into your ears
and is creating a special gloomy atmosphere, which is always causing
goose bumps every time I listen to it. Not to mention these perfectly
fitting samples, worth being part of a soundtrack made in Hollywood,
which you can find everywhere on this record - WOW! The penultimate
piece on this record Aesthesis is my absolute favorite.
It is simply a blast to cannonade your ears: pure, brutal and
with immense pressure on blast beats VESANIA bid farewell.
The last ticking of the clocks belonging to Distractive Cryscendo
- kind of an outro to this album - the guys leave the listener
curious for what they will offer on next release...
Distractive Killusions – an absolute must-have
for everyone who likes brutal music packaged in perfectly played,
sophisticated and artful arrangements – simply TOP!
