In expectation of another Doom or at least Dark Metal pearl Finish label Firebox comes with an Alternative/Gothic Rock album. Founded back in 1998 VELVETCUT have put out two demos so far that made them land this deal for the release of their debut album Thirteen. On this album they offer straightforward rock with a typical melancholically Scandinavian touch that cleverly sails around shallow and clichéd waters where bands like HIM and co are sailing in. Though, VELVETCUT noticeably aim at the mainstram market since their guitars are never too heavy (although that would suit them well), melodies are catchy and the sort of inexpressive voice of singer/guitarist Tomi skillfully caters your ears, while romantic strings (Comfortable Silence) and piano tunes (The Chase) put the finishing touches on Thirteen. That makes this album to a beautiful and harmonic but also predictable and faceless matter. It’s nice but hey guys, release the brake and let it rock!
