It’s been a while since I got my hands on some recent old school death metal. THE OBLITERATE PLAGUE rises from the depths of an unlikely place known as Salt Lake City, Utah. Sounding like they just crawled out of the nearest grave yard The Wrath Of Cthulhu serves up some dynamic neck ripping death metal that channels the sound from the late 80s and early 90s. Though they formed way back in 1999 this is in fact their very first full length. They had put out an EP in 2004 and a split in 2005 and I am not sure of the reason for the dormancy between then and now. Whatever the case, they have risen from beyond to give an exceptional offering of demonic death metal.

THE OBLITERATE PLAGUE is surprisingly only a three piece. Alex Jorgensen’s vocals are skull shatteringly evil. Growling, grunting and sounding like a rabid corpse screaming from the tomb. His guitar skills are equally impressive, aggressively fast, with a melodic touch and crazy solos. Think of old Entombed! The drummer also takes on the second guitar as well as backing vocals. Blast beats a plenty as well as insane timings keep the songs going at a rapid pace. This guy has mad drumming skills! The bass isn’t quite as prevalent in the mix, but there are indeed some intricate bass solos going on during Infected By Chaos. After listening to The Wrath Of Cthulhu I can only imagine the incredible power THE OBLITERATE PLAGUE would give off during a live performance. The songs are unmistakably head bang inducing and mosh worthy. Keeping death metal the way it should be evil and traditional. Following in the steps of the great death metal bands of the early 1990s THE OBLITERATE PLAGUE have that brutalizing touch of evil that most new bands fail to achieve.
