The more mysterious
a band is the more you want to know about them. Germany’s
TODESKULT has me mind boggled. Apathy is
their third release from this five man band. Not much information
is known about them unless you are fluent in the German language.
Now we shall journey into the depths of depressive black metal
that TODESKULT seems to produce so well.
From the very
beginning of the first song, Where Discomfort Is Lurking,
I can tell this is going to be heavy. I don’t mean heavy
as in a traditional sense of heavy metal, but I mean heavy as
in the emotions of the music. TODESKULT’s take on
black metal is as grim and distant as a misanthrope can get. The
vocals are quite abrasive. They are screamed in a rather distinctive
high pitched voice. Very reminiscent of Silencer! If that says
anything to you. Even though the lyrics are all in German, you
can not mistake the painfully tortured screams that seem to communicate
universal agony. As far as the music goes I here quite a bit of
Silencer influence in TODESKULT’s music. Guitars
are solemnly played slowly; don’t look for anything fast
here, including drum beats. Aside from that, the songs are incredibly
long, and when you think it is ending, it just changes from one
oppressive form and continues into an even darker place. Sometimes
though, the song keeps dwindling on and you wonder how much more
melancholic it can get. The songs seem to fade into one another
after awhile and it gets hard to tell where one ends and one begins,
literally. TODESKULT seems to be the type of Black Metal
band that isn’t afraid to take risks with their music. Apathy
soars to new heights of depression and takes you down to a bottomless
black abyss.
