Some weeks
after the promising Godless Cruelty debut album, I got the next
release from Northfire Rec. THYRGRIM already
put out a demo in 2005 and few of these songs can also be found
on this album. Although they don't play as rough as Godless Cruelty,
this is still old school without any compromise. Here and there
you can hear Thrash Metal influences and most of the record reminds
me of the first albums of Desaster (and that's everything but
a bad reference). Still, THYRGRIM are much more
primitive. It's not high speed all the time, but that's good for
the cold and savage atmosphere. Lyrically, the songs are not about
God and Satan, but THYRGRIM seem to be more interested
in things like winter, coldness, nature, ancient times and spiritual
states. On Kältetot one will find acoustic guitars
and sounds of a stormy winter night. All the time I want to go
on a winter hike, but I am afraid that in June this desire cannot
be fulfilled. All lyrics are in German, but unfortunately the
vocals are somewhere far in the background. Although I like that
old school style very much, I have to say that the album is getting
a bit boring from the middle. Considering the fact that Winterhall
consists of 10 songs, a little more variety would not have been
wrong. So, it's a bit too much of the same.
