I have to
confess, THROES OF DAWN is a band that passed me completely
disregarded. And I only picked up The Great Fleet Of Echoes
after our writer Stormlord recommended this album to me.
The meanwhile fifth album of the Finns is captivating, hauntingly
beautiful and of a dark tranquility. But there are also parts
on this record offering some serene moments that actually appears
to be pretty croony. Soft Whispers Of The Chemical Sun
is such song that also reminds me of British folk song Scarborough
Fair. When it comes to the acoustic parts I on the other hand
get Agalloch in mind, especially as in Lethe.
The Great Fleet Of Echoes is a gentle album. It
still owns rocking guitar work but I even would not call it Metal
anymore. Dark Rock perhaps. The Great Fleet Of Echoes has
for sure its great moments and I love to listen to it, but after
several runs I wish THROES OF DAWN would rock out a little
bit more, would be heavier and more Metal-like as they do in Velvet
Chokehold and in the refrains of We Have Ways To Hurt You
and the title-track. This all embracing sweet temper is a little
bit annoying and sees the band still caught between two stools
stylistically.
