Medion:
Right in time before the next edition of the biggest metal-festivals
around Europe we get an overdose of last year's live-performances
at Wacken Open Air. Divided into three disks, Armageddon
Over Wacken offers stuff for every metalhead. One
Heavy-Metal-Disk featuring illustrous acts like Dio, Motörhead,
Nevermore or Doro, then one CD for extremer stuff from Children
of Bodom over Mayhem to Cannibal Corpse and finally a newcomer-orientated
silver-plate that contains songs from acts like Feinstein, Ektomorf
or Mnemic. The soundquality is good overall (except for Nevermore's
Enemies of Reality-chaos) and you feel the live-atmosphere. Also
the price is alright, fan-friendly under 20€ (remember: three
cds!).
If you are a metalfan without boundaries in style, Armageddon
Over Wacken is definitely something for you, also
the fun-stuff of Elekäläiset oder JBO. If you are, however,
particularly dedicated to one style, then I doubt that this CD
is worth its money then.
Recommended tracks: Dio: Holy Diver, Motörhead:
Life Is A Bitch, Destruction: Nailed To The Cross
and Blaze Bailey's orchestral version of Fear Of The Dark.

WACKEN OPEN AIR festival is nowadays the biggest,
strongest, loudest and top metal fest in Europe.
For those (like me) who dream about going there one day, and for
those who have actually been there and want to revive the experience,
Armageddon Music releases this album with 3 hours of pure, loud
and delightful W:O:A live experience.
Even though they’ve had better billings in my opinion, 2004’s
WACKEN OPEN AIR Festival offered a very decent
and complete cartel, featuring (on this album) top metal acts
like Anthrax, Destruction, Children Of Bodom, Cannibal Corpse,
Cathedral, Bal Sagoth, Dio, Mayhem, Motorhead and others.
Now, one of the most difficult things for sound engineers is to
capture all the sounds in live performances, and mix the whole
thing together trying not to lose any details; believe me when
I say that ARMAGEDDON OVER WACKEN is not going
to disappoint you in that aspect.
This 3 CD-set is divided in 1.- Black/Death/Thrash, for the fans
of speed and brutality; 2.-Power/Traditional, for the fans of
the classic metal sounds and 3.- Underground, featuring not-so
known metal acts that had a chance to perform in Wacken.
Something I have to mention is that in order to know if this was
like the ideal play list, I would have to be there actually, still
the track list is good and you can actually feel the metal-fest
vibe in the 3 chapters of this album, I just think that it would
have been awesome to include more of the bands in here, instead
of putting 2 tracks of others for example.
Don’t get me wrong, the album is diverse and revealing,
but I think that some important bands were left out from this
album (Satyricon, Amon Amarth and others)
Either way it goes, if you enjoy the extreme metal acts, if you
are an old-fashioned classic metalhead or if you are only into
underground acts, WACKEN OPEN AIR will always
have the right thing for you, same with this album, you can always
make the right choice according to your own musical taste.
The only thing about this album that I would like to hear is just
a bit more “audience” noise, which would have been
just amazing and would have enhanced the whole “Fest-vibes”
for this production.
ARMAGEDDON OVER WACKEN LIVE 2004 is a great compilation
that makes you want to go there (or back there) so damn bad!!
I hope I can go there this year!!!!
Recommended!
