The Last Son Of The Fjord is not a new album of the Russian Viking Metal band, the fine debut release is just edited once more. At that time in the year 2000, not many groups played this kind of epic Viking steel – and under these premises one must see The Last Son Of The Fjord. There is a little bit of nostalgia while listening to the music, but this bonus the quartet round singer/guitarist Sigurd does not need because the epic songs are blessed with formidable melodies permanently. Concerning speed, the guys act rather unhurried - the term “solemn” denominates the music arguably best. Singer Sigurd’s accent sounds really nice and contributes to the band’s sympathy additionally. Sigurd uses his voice throughout lion-hearted and majestically, at the same time there are no trips to overly cheerful Humppa regions, which is already offered by many other bands. The two instrumental tracks, placed on the fifth and last position, fit in very well and render The Last Son Of The Fjord to a homogenous complete works, which rather scores with constant quality than with single hits. Even in all other tracks, the voice is used quite sparsely and wide-stretched instrumental passages emboss the sound scope.
The question remains why this album is released again…and as we all can easily guess there is some additional material to listen to alternatively to gaze at. A few weeks ago, I experienced a NOMANS LAND show (at Ragnarök Festival in Germany) and therefore a concert on DVD is a nice thing…and also here the band shows joy in playing (the location is the Arktika Club in St.Petersburg), the musicians grin for most of the time, if they don’t bang their heads, haha! Many songs from the Hammerfrost album (released in 2005) are played, but also two new songs (Mjolnir and Raven Flight) are present on the set list. I also have a lot of fun with this concert and that’s why this re-release is reasonable!
