I really do
not know what to think about NEAL MORSE and his
massive output, especially since he left Spock’s Beard.
His strongly religious lyrical concepts tend to make me sick every
time I listen to his albums, but on the other hand, the man is
brilliant from a musical point of view. Sola Scriptura
makes no exception here – a solid 75 minutes long prog opus
with highly renowned guest musicians and an ambitious concept.
After all, it is a great album – but it is also very “morsey”.
If you liked ?, Testimony,
One and his other solo albums, you
will probably like it. If not, then I urgently advise you not
to buy this disc as you would probably deeply regret it. To be
honest, I am definitely not the kind of man who can truly be considered
as a NEAL MORSE fan, and I could never listen
to this kind of music all day long, but to take up the cudgels
for Neal I have to admit that Sola Scriptura
is much more endurable and unobtrusive than Testimony
or ?, so I decided to give a cautious
recommendation for this album. So if you dare to enter the lair
of the audible excesses of a religious sectarian driving mad with
his Hammond organ, do not hesitate. You will either love or hate
it, but do not blame me if you suddenly get the idea of becoming
an acolyte and feel the duty to obey the great leader Morsus Christ.
But hey, it IS, and I can only repeat that, it IS a great album!
