After having reviewed the phenomenal Live DVD Our Pain Your Gain I now in addition want to deliver a review of the last year’s output You’ll Rebel To Anything.
That’s actually not a brand new record but a re-mastered and enhanced version of the originally in 2005 released album. The track-list has changed, and there 2 bonus tracks for the American version and even 4 bonus tracks for the European version to find on it, plus the bonus video to the MSI hit Molly.
Again opening track Shut Me Up is a real smash hit! I absolutely love this song and it’s turning out to be one of my MSI favorites ;) Straight To Video and the title-track doesn’t fall any short by the way ;)
MINDLESS SELF INDULGENCE is an institution, a manifest! Here chaos reigns. Little Jimmy Urine and his girls and guys swirl through all kind of musical genres take and use what they like, creatively combine all elements in their very own style. MSI are hellish fast, heavy, really wild and pretty odd ;) MSI unite pure raw Punk, Industrial and Metal to a crossover style that deserves its name. Vocally Jimmy uses a wide spectrum; it’s unbelievable what tunes he gets out of his chords. And he in such a way speeds at singing that Serj Tankian should turn pale while listening to him. Also the breaks in the music should drive musicians and listeners mad. But if you have seen drum-girl Kitty performing live… she looked quite relaxed ;)
Lyrics stay hard, drop of acid cynicism and are still much socially critical, ending up on the index in series. They really tell the American society where to get off, especially regarding the treatment with homosexuals.
Regarding the sound and production I wish that all songs where that asskicking and heavy as Tom Sawyer is. Unfortunately most of the songs drop off in their heaviness in support of the Industrial samples.
You’ll Rebel To Anything was the third and last regular record in 2005. Afterwards remixes and different album versions and already mentioned live DVD followed. Now, in 2008 MINDLESS SELF INDULGENCE is all about the brand new record If and the European tour! So be aware ;)
