Since their formation in 1987, MALEVOLENT CREATION has always been one of the most promising Death Metal bands coming from the US. Their album The Fine Art of Murder showed that the band kept improving and even dragged the attention of major label Nuclear Blast. About time that these guys get some decent promotion, they've been in the underground for way too long!

After listening to some new Death Metal releases, I was already giving up the scene. While Kataklysm got rewarded in several magazines, I really couldn't listen to them for 5 minutes. But like I do with every review, I give the band a chance, and so I did for MALEVOLENT CREATION.

The Will To Kill is everything MALEVOLENT CREATION promised, 40 minutes of pure grinding Death Metal featuring their new vocalist Kyle Symons. And what a great production! Actually the first song already offers everything I'm looking for in a good Death Metal release. A tremendous sound, grunts combined with screams, and a lot of great riffs! A fast crushing song is nice for a while, but no one can listen 40 minutes to it with the same attention. But I'm glad MALEVOLENT CREATION realises this by adding some midtempo parts! The highlight of the album sure is the track Rebirth of Terror, some may think it's too much inspired by SLAYER's Jesus Saves, but in my opinion it's a killer song that will make some heads banging! And I sure can't forget the contribution of legend James Murphy in the song Assassin Squad.

To be honest, when I gave The Will to Kill a first spin, I did not like it much since I've been out the death metal scene for way to long. Even now 40 minutes is too long to keep my attention. So the fairest thing to do was listening to 4 tracks and then take a 5 min break. So heavy metal fans are warned, you'll not survive this release! But if you're into pure crushing Death Metal, you should already own The Will to Kill! No matter what, I'll sure be banging at MALEVOLENT CREATION's gig at Wacken 2003!!!
