One and a
half year after LA MAMOYNIA have released their
self-titled debut album these Italian gents strikes back with
Mono Ego. On the sophomore nothing
has changed that much. Musically and instrumentally the band remains
true to themselves, seamlessly tie in with the predecessor. This
time production is more discreet and the voice of singer Dimitri
not that dominant in the foreground anymore. Though, his voice
is still disturbing and brute at the same time. Songs are more
homogeneous, you can even speak of coherent soundscapes, drifting
away a little from the minimalism of the debut album. But it doesn’t
mean that one gets an easier access to the music, no, the tracks
are still strange, crazy and stodgy, unfolding its attraction
after several spins. Melodies are dark, cold and depressive. Samples
and sounds create an oppressively paranoid atmosphere. Ich
bin Niemand and Nightmares I’m Hiding From
get stuck, while the other ones offer familiar tunes and the queer
“Atari-sounds” (Links), heavy bass lines
(Agapi, Ti Mekali Leksi) and the violin in Something
That Does Not Exist. LA MAMOYNIA have surely
polished their style but they still didn’t land the big
hit yet. They create a fascinating and unique mix of Dark- and
Coldwave with Industrial influences and have an amazing singer
with Dimitri Triantafyllou, but I still miss something special,
making them irresistible and their music outstanding.
