John Fryer,
producer of LACRIMAS PROFUNDERE, is a boundless
optimist! He is in the opinion that Filthy Notes For
Frozen Hearts could be as successful as an output
of Finland’s superstars H.I.M. At least it would be possible
because of the musical ingredients, the problem is the time: LACRIMAS
PROFUNDERE offer the same mixture a few years later.
That’s the reason why I am very skeptical concerning Fryer’s
assumption. The way of composing and heaviness of these two bands
is quite similar - Filthy Notes For Frozen Hearts
has got the power comparable to Finland’s Goth Rock Finest
debut album.
Again It’s Over is a real hit, catchy tunes at
its best – this song will fill all dance floors immediately
for sure; Napalm Records have to care for appropriate promotion,
also extensive touring would be a well chosen point in time with
a brand-new album. Each fan from Depeche Mode to Sentenced or
Type O Negative should be exalted by this musical cocktail; for
certain heaviness is also present. The guitars stand in the foreground
definitely, and the vocals are done without whiningly pathos most
of the time. The energy and songs’ performance take a convenient
effect on the ears. It is interesting that most of the songs attain
intensity during the playing time. Not only the above mentioned
Again It’s Over, which is contained as video version,
too, offers a refrain like a barbed hook; this golden hand for
easy to sing-along-melodies is designative till the end. The quality
stays above average constantly during the whole album, whereas
pure ballads are omitted fortunately, only Short Glance
sounds a little bit too sweet and sickly. The following faster
track Filthy Notes wipes off this emergence of toothache
instantly like an energy drink neutralizing the taste of sticky
candy floss. It is flamboyant again that the song increases its
intensity the longer it lasts. Sad Theme For Marriage
is a sentimental song, firm on the dog-end to anew tooth problems;
acoustic guitars and string sounds create an atmosphere where
romanticism and brummagem lie at close quarters. Fortunately heavier
remedy is found in form of the upcoming Should. I have
to say that heaviness in Gothic Metal is relative: it means the
increased use of guitars and driving passages and no growling
or furious double bass attacks…
That’s exactly the reason why LACRIMAS PROFUNDERE
comes off well in my valuation, as the band sets also priorities
on roaring guitars despite of all catchiness. Nevertheless, Filthy
Notes For Frozen Hearts stays slight fare and the
target group will be enthused for sure – but I am afraid
that this album arrives a few years too late for a sweeping success…
