Magick
For Cherishings is different, sort of. The third part
of this trilogy is most time instrumentally composed, sometimes
there is no music at all, and only lives from the vocal expressiveness
by JARBOE. Her singing appears even more like magic incantations
as in the in- and outro, a possible reason why all 10 tracks don’t
have titles.
Also song two only lives from its singing, well it’s not
singing, more layered vocal tones, again in an intensive and disturbing
way only JARBOE is able to. When half of the song passed
by saturninely wafting sound fragments flow in, adding a schizophrenic
note to the atmosphere. All that is just the prelude to the following
track, the highlight on Magick For Cherishings.
Wickedly distorted guitars and oppressive tribal drumming rule
this song. Again the listener will be hypnotized, moves as in
trance, caught and captivated in unfathomable ceremonies. You
will feel the heat on your skin while fear and desire likewise
wash around you. Just unbelievable!
Afterwards it’s getting freaky. A downright cheerful sounding
guitar song forms a twisted and crazy contrast that acts alien-like
and misplaced. I felt fooled, trying to elude these tunes. And
so it goes with track 5, in a normal way sung, but in French.
Here I have reached limit of comprehensibleness.
I am thankful for the mystical sounds (re)setting in after this
trip into madness, although piercing shrieks and snore (???) give
proof that madness didn’t loose entirely yet.
As for me
I have to say that Magick For Cherishings is the
weakest part so far of this trilogy.
Although having recorded these EP’s in a studio I find the
sound partly unbalanced and some songs overamplified. It all sounds
much like a demo/underground production. It might be intentional
to amplify moods on these records.
As already mentioned, JARBOE is a brimming creative soul,
who has released a couple of new stuff in the meantime. It’s
said that she already works on new sequels and I’m much
looking forward how this series will turn out in the future ;)
