What I already
was assuming during the Suicide Commando tour a few weeks ago
got now impressively confirmed. While Swedish EBM newcomer INTERLACE
went pretty down on tour despite of spacy stage outfits and a
great performance they offer a masterpiece of music at home between
your own four walls.
The latest European EP Under The Sky
appears different compared with the original version (Japan).
So the title track Under The Sky can be found only once
as club version, while Equus appears in two remix versions
(by Headscan and Implant) and Icon I turns to Icon
II. Additionally the guys have put most of the tracks from
their debut Innuendo (besides Equus
and Missing Link) as bonus tracks on this record (since
the debut did not reach the audience despite of good reviews galore).
In musical terms you get served pure EBM as its best. Sometimes
much energetic and powerful, most time extremely dark and oppressive.
Whereas I have to admit: I like more the darker stuff, most of
all Pinioned and in fact all tracks from the first album,
that show much Industrial influences. These drums’n’bass
rhythm on Under The Sky make this song to a heavy pounding
dancefloor killer, but I don’t like it that much and hope
INTERLACE won’t utilize them too often
in the future.
Altogether I would like to describe the music of INTERLACE
as very intellectual and not really suitable to the masses. But,
it does not mean the music is heavily accessible, no way! It’s
just … more sophisticated.
One might draw musical comparisons to Skinny Puppy, on Pinioned
even to Depeche Mode at a certain point.
There is not that much to tell about the band since the guys extremely
maintain a low profile, even create an enigma around INTERLACE.
Well, it surely has its charm …
Under
The Sky is a great album I warmly recommend to every
EBM freak out there. Innovative, intensive with captivating melodies
and the expressive voice of Oscar Wilkinson. And me has already
ordered Innuendo …
