HORDE OF
HEL unleashes their fiery and unique spin on black metal to
us in the form of their second release Likdagg.
Shrouded in a black cloud of mystery HORDE OF HEL hails
from Sweden and its trio of members also partake in various black,
death and Viking metal bands. Led by John Odhinn Sandin on vocals
along with Hasse Karlsson on guitar and Stefan Kihlgren on bass,
a mystery is left as to who is tending drums. Whoever it is, seems
to be quite human. The musical chemistry between these three is
astounding. Superb songwriting leads to captivating guitar riffs
and mesmerizing songs. The guitars have a resonating effect. Going
from traditional black metal sounds, to more melodic and atmospheric
slower parts. The vocals are misanthropic growls and sinister
screams. The drums bounce back and fourth between mid paced and
fast paced. Lyrics and song titles are in Swedish, with the name
Satan shining threw and the exception of the song Celebration.
Fine production gives way to every layer of sound put into this
album. As Likdagg opens with the song Herrens
Tid and smashes all doubts with a direct approach to prime
and present black metal. Trendy by no means. HORDE OF HEL
seems to follow their own recipe for black metal. Adding a little
bit of keyboards and vocal effects that only add to a menacing
atmosphere. Likdagg continues to bewilder and mystify
from beginning to end. HORDE OF HEL is one of the more
bizarre black metal bands I have heard in awhile and is quite
pleasing for those looking for that sound that takes black metal
a little further.
