Canada is
the prefect place to conjure up some of the coldest and blackest
metal out there. One man band SOMBRES FORETS and two man
band GRIS have come together to blend their talents into
one for the album Miserere Lumini. This album tends
to be more of a compilation of these two bands rather than a split.
Plunging right
into the first song Cineris, they waste no time pulling
out the chillingly distant guitar riffs. The guitars do pull a
bit of influence from Katatonia. At times they are truly heavy,
but for the most part remain melodically melancholy. The atmosphere
of the song three Ciel Tragique, starts leading the listener
down the path of isolation and despair. The vocalist growls and
howls like a lone wolf lost within the confines of sorrow. IV
picks up the pace a bit with faster beats. An intriguing and desolate
instrumental. There is certainly nothing upbeat or Satanic about
Miserere Luminis. Do not expect anything fast either.
All songs remain in a void of total depressiveness. The production
on this album is incredibly clear and gives fair play to all instruments
and vocals involved. Unfortunately after five songs it is possible
to become incredibly bored with this release. The songs get to
be long and seemingly dragged to their imminent death. Unless
you are in a highly depressive mood, it is hard to get through
this entire album.
