An ambitious
project: Folk/Pagan Metal musicians from different European countries
(Sweden, Greece, England, Lithuania, Switzerland, Austria) record
an album together. A Nordic Poem is
already 2 years old. It is obvious that Magnus Wohlfart from Sweden
and Marios Koutsoukos from Greece had the idea to do this as all
songs and lyrics were written by them. It starts rather powerful
with Fenriz Unbound, sounding Anglo-saxon as well as
Scandinavian and showing raw screams but also clean vocals - a
combination a like very much about that kind of metal. Horned
Trolls And Mystical Folk is of the same type, but after that
song, the music gets more relaxed and majestic and there’s
not much more left for those who like it fast and raw. A good
example is Ryming With Thunder, featuring Forefather
members Wulfstan and Athelsan and unmistakably sounding like their
main band. This song, like some of the others, has a mighty atmosphere
on the one hand, but on the other hand got too little pressure.
Talking about that, the sound of the whole record could have taken
much more pepper! The vocals are a little out of tune in some
places, but that’s exactly in the tradition of Pagan Metal
Forefathers Bathory, isn’t it? All in all, it’s too
many choruses and too little fury and heaviness for me, despite
parts of the album are definitely well done. Maybe I should mention
Gryningssång, a pure folk song in Swedish language
(all others are in English) and really recommendable. But still,
after several times hearing the whole album, I’ m not sure
if I’m satisfied or not.
