Some of my
favorite Black Metal bands include the likes of Siebenbürgen
and The Sins Of Thy Beloved. Enter into the fold, DARK
FACES.
From the eerily
familiar intro, The Path…, which smacks a bit of
the Cradle Of Filth intro’s we’ve all heard, to the
high energy of almost industrial sounding Omen… this band
is exciting and new.
DARK
FACES is a mix of neo-classical and black metal with
hint of Goth and even Industrial influences. The song writing
is top notch, the band members are highly skilled musicians and
this is equally highlighted by the beautiful soprano vocals of
singer Katrin Loffier.
What makes DARK FACES unique is their ability
to write music with obvious black metal roots and incorporate
other more mainstream sounds and make it work on a new level.
Much of that has been done before but not to this extent. We’ve
all heard classical, neo-classical and operatic vocals in the
mix before but DARK FACES takes our ears on a
roller coaster ride while keeping the music true to the diehard
fans of the metal.
Some songs
of note early on in the CD are Schattenreich, Farscape
Forest and Room Of Deadly Silence. All scathing
Black Metal to feast your ears on. Each a nice mix of classic
Black Metal riffs with a new twist.
The song Creature
Of The Night is a 45 second piano solo to help you catch
your breath, a nice touch to set the mood for the second part
of the CD.
The next set
of songs picks up a bit of a Goth theme with Vampire And The
Witchhunt being the 2 gems of the second half of the CD.
Finally with the remainder of the CD the band gives a definite
industrial twist on things.
The
Path, by DARK FACES, could almost
be considered 3 mini CD's in one. With such a variety of sounds
this band has developed in their song writing I hope they find
vast audience for their music as I enjoyed this CD very much.
I look forward to great things from them in the future.
