A freshly founded new label with the name a German metal online magazine owns too (don’t mistake) kicks off its activities with COLDWORLD – a Thuringian one-man-project founded back in 2005 by G.B. (sorry, that’s all info I got) – now releasing the band’s first EP TheStarsAreDeadNow and promising Cold Suicide Black Metal in the veins of Xasthur and Shining. Suits me down the ground… ;)
Introducing track This Empty Life gets started with heavily melancholic-draped and downright depressive and desperate soundscapes, perfectly reflecting the meaning of the song title. Hate again offers a pure rock’n’roll attitude, lightening the mood a little and bringing some variety to the listener’s ears, while dark keyboard parts still bridge to the original atmosphere of TheStarsAreDeadNow. Cancer falls back into the spheres of the opener making you feel to listen to it again. Stylistically in the same vein Suicide runs out of the speakers. Still dark and depressive as anything else. Closer The Old Ghost In The Well is a pure instrumental and shows the best approach musically, since mastermind G.B. much more experiments with sounds and samples adding something special and unique to the song. Black-metallic scream-like singing is quite blurry and in the background; they could have worked out in studio much better.
TheStarsAreDeadNow is a promising first sign of musical life. My personal feeling says: combine The Old Ghost In The Well with the fury guitar work of the other songs and add a more differentiated singing and it will be perfect! ;)
In matter of the project itself: time will tell in what way COLDWORLD will develop, since one-man-projects tend to turn out one-dimensional coz of missing outer influences, even when the musical basic idea is great.
The copy of TheStarsAreDeadNow I got is already sold out. But the label promises a second issue with new cover artwork and 2 bonus tracks. So be prepared!
