I
must admit, I am a sucker for music coming from Italy like the wave
legend Kirlian Camera as well as the percussion oriented Neofolk/Military
of Camerata Mediolanense. So I jumped in happy anticipation at the
two CD-R’s of the Roman BLACK SUN to humor
my need for new music across the Alps.
Founded already in 1994 by Luca Basili, their music contains a sometimes
strange mix of fast, monotone and bass drum-oriented Darkelectro
with some atmospheric elements in the mid-tempo area. This stylistic
jumble is supported by male and female vocals/recitative, especially
the female vocals show the for Kirlian Camera typical Italian accent,
which contributes to the sometimes morbid charm of BLACK
SUN.
The 2 CD-R’s are at the end of a long list of demo publications
and contain songs between 2003 and 2004. I cannot say if one of
the CD-R’s is better, as both have their strong and weak points.
Slower songs like Nothing, The Mission cover Heaven
Send You or The Bleed have stuck. The faster songs
are in some parts monotone and deliberately kept technoid, which
results in connection with the not quite so good production (especially
Di Fersi Morendo Eterni) in a dull and
tiring sound, which shows effort but no real enthusiasm. The bass
drum is often pounding forlorn and lost. Also the songwriting is
not particularly matured and the sound structures in my opinion
very minimalist, but maybe the last point can be interpreted as
deliberately used stylistic device.
All in all I cannot give a general, unrestricted recommendation
to buy both of these CD-R’s, but fans of (Italian) electro
with strange charm should risk listening to them. |
