News from a musician we haven't heard from for about 2 years now. Stuart Anistis is back! Everyone who doesn't know what I'm talking about, Stuart was guitarist and a main part in the song writing process of Cradle of Filth, unless he quit because of personal and musical differences in 1999. Now it's the first release since then, he does it completely alone and it stands apart from his former musical trails.
APHELION is the name of the new solo-project. A concept where only roman numbers mark the songs and almost no voice is used. But what is it? It's definitely not metal, the music consists mainly of drum loops, samples and various electronic sounds. In parts, the material sounds very catchy and forces your body to move somehow, just to develop into a bizarre collage of sounds.
Extracts of the songs have an oriental touch, on one hand because of the melodies, on the other because of the female vocalist, who uses her voice as an instrument, because I can't determine any lyrics out of what she chants. Even if there are any it has to be a foreign language that I do not know. Somehow these parts remind me of Massive Attack, while others rather give me these Beats 'n' Brakes feeling like Crystal Method. A little bit the last record of Ulver comes to my mind too, cause this record is surely of the same style. It is a brilliant bled of electronic music you don' hear every day.
This record is recommended for everyone, who is into bizarre electronic music and who likes the bands I mentioned above, but also for those, who want to broaden their horizon, because here you get something, which is somehow unique and done in a excellent way. The only negative point is the very short playing time of 34 minutes, nevertheless I award maximum points and I'm awaiting the next Album!!!
