I think it is just natural that we feel most comfortable with our native tongue. And though, in case of the German sung Death Metal lyrics by ACT OF CREATION it feels strange. Not bad at all but cumbersome, unusual and uncomfortable. But exactly this paradox makes the band stand out the masses, even if just at the edge of the genre.
With a double release in 2010, Thion is now the third record for ACT OF CREATION and consequently continues the path they chose with their sophomore, Endstation.
Thion is a stylistically much diversified album, ranging from staccato-like modern Death Metal up to classic neck breaker a lá Cannibal Corpse and others. ACT OF CREATION draws from many influences, hint at various directions, use many elements, change pace and dynamics. Thion is a sophisticated and challenging record yet not overly complex and tricky. ACT OF CREATION use the entire spectrum the Death Metal genre has to offer, but never break out and go any further.
The opening track Tagtraum is a modern one and reminds me a bit of Rob Zombie, due to the singing. Geist and 13 Tage again represent the groovy and riff-dominated classics. I like the guitar melodies here. ACT OF CREATION also speed up and add a progressive touch.
Singing is likewise varied, an alternation between two singers that span from bawls up to shouts and guttural deep vocals.
Thion does not only shine musically but also lyric-wise. Lyrics are an important matter to the band and follow and overall concept. On the sophomore it was the “death”, while Thion deals with the daily demons in our lives.
Thion is a fascinating album but surely takes its time. It’s not an easy listening matter. Many runs are needed to get used to the language (for Germans) but then it is a pleasure to bring music and lyrics in line and to discover details.
What remains is the question, if this fascination will reach the majority of fans or just the smaller circles of connoisseur.
