WEIRD
FATE, founded in 2001 by Manuel, Tobias, and Nils; they
set out to create dark, atmospheric black metal. Few months later
Eva and Oliver were added to the ranks to round out this darkly
ambient sound. Manuel was later replaced by Martin in 2003. The
music the band was creating was at first written in acoustic form,
later to be spiced up with some amps and some distortion pedals.
And sometime in the summer of 2004 they set out on an adventure
to create this self-produced demo called Seelennacht.
The album itself is split up into 8 tracks for just 4 songs, so
it’s a little hard to tell which song you are actually listening
to. The beginning intro to the first track Seelennacht,
sounds like it sound be played in some forest in Transylvania,
or during a Halloween marathon of The Munsters. The song itself
is very “old school” Norwegian black metal, complete
with vocals a la Darkthrone. Acoustic guitars try to somber down
the feeling on the next track Heathen Tragedy, later
to be replaced with harmonized, distorted guitars. At first you
think the song may actually be better than the first, then you
listen a bit more to discover that cool riff is now being interrupted
by church organs. The album takes you back to those good ol’
days when black metal reigned supreme, but time moves on and musical
tastes change just like the seasons. This album would have been
ten times better if it where released 10 years ago. Since this
sound was perfected so many years ago, it’s really quite
hard to perfect on perfection.
