Somehow similar to their landmates Rotting Christ here is another Greek band that has released quite a few CDs already but never got over their status of an "insider-tip": NIGHTFALL. Their latest effort Lyssa - Rural Gods And Astonishing Punishments also shows why...
Although their mixture of Death, Heavy & Gothic Metal is nice listening to, it is nothing outstanding and starting to get quite monotone after some time. Dark Red Sky is a misplaced opener without catchy riffing but boring double-bass-drumming, while Swollen follows in the same vein and isn't able to catch my interest either. Only the noisy guitar-soli and leads offer some cool approach, which of course is too little. A highlight of Lyssa, however, is Master Of My Dreams with a perfect sinister main-riff and great atmosphere. The rest of the CD varies between average and good songs and I must admit that NIGHTFALL get better by the end. Of course you also got the typical southern accent we know from Rotting Christ but it suits the overall sound of the band quite well. Lyssa may not be the greatest or most innovative Death/Gothic-CD but it isn't the worst either. Nevertheless I doubt that the band will get new fans with this release...
