The second
album of the Swedes surprises the author of these lines, this
can’t be denied. The squad of young Swedish Black Metal
bands such as Blodsrit presents itself immensely fresh and refreshing
at the same time and delights with imaginativeness and a keen
sense of catchy riffs. MÖRKER belong to this category,
too, who release only their second album with Höstmakter.
The „powers of autumn“ are unleashed in twelve songs.
Rainy, stormy or dreamily foggy, the days become shorter, the
winter announces itself. All moods are celebrated here, beginning
with the double strike I Flodens Forsande Brus/Segertåg.
Both songs dismiss the hot summer full of anticipation to the
autumn months with their reminiscences to the early Dimmu Borgir
predominantly in mid-tempo and with wonderful melodies which stick
in one’s head quickly, but which don’t really offend
as well. That’s why the songs miss any approach of clout.
For MÖRKER attach too much importance to guitar melodies,
instead of coming up with something just like the one or another
mean killer riff with power chords. That is, sweet ain’t
sour at the same time. Nevertheless, songs such as Falk with its
beautiful orchestration or the folk-like Djupa Spår Av
Tvivel cast a spell over you and remain in your head for a
while.
The weak point on Höstmakter is the vocals
of Ascaroth next to the already mentioned one-dimensional song
writing. He has great screeching organ. But the emotions created
by the guitar front can’t be found in vocal sector.
Well, now one might ask oneself whether nine points are slightly
exaggerated for an album like Höstmakter. No,
they definitely aren’t, because in spite of the given points
of critique the album amuses oneself, is produced pleasantly and
technically capably performed. And you will merge into the songs
of MÖRKER if you like autumn as much as the three
Swedes (plus session drummer Niklas) who present themselves uncommonly
and fortunately without corpse paint on their promo pictures.
