It wasn’t long ago that I got my hands on a demo CD of an awesome band from Sweden by the name of LEGIONS OF WAR. Being blown away by their style of blackened thrash metal, it was only a matter of time before a label would pick up on this war metal band. Fast forward to a year later, and a deal with Inferno Records, LEGIONS OF WAR brings to us their first official release entitled Towards Death. And here they go marching forward.

No intros needed here, we are thrust full throttle into song one, entitled Deep In The Dark. Starting off with the exploding fast drumming of C. Stalinorgel. The song gains momentum with the fast and heavy guitar picking of Widowreaper and guitarist/vocalist Zyklon. The bass playing of Hellwind has a grindy sound. The vocal styling of Zyklon is angrily scream growled mid range. Each word well pronounced. Master Of War picks up the pace like an anthem of a soldier going into battle. This is definitely an album that you can bang your head to. Mission To Kill starts off solemnly, but don’t let that fool you, it goes right into a black thrash assault. One of the best songs on the album, with very strong song structure, and dooming lyrics. All lyrical content on LEGIONS OF WAR's Towards Death album focus on, war. Each song like a story of fighting and death. Lamentations Through The Silence showcases bassist’s Hellwind’s skills with a fine intro, which steers the music right into a brutal thrash line of fire. Widowreaper continues to rip leads inside of each song. Another great song on the album is Reflections Of The Past, A Soldiers Departure Pt 1. LEGIONS OF WAR get serious here and slow it down a little. Though the song is a bit mid paced, the grizzly lyrics really set the tone of melancholy and add some realism to the song. They speed it back up with Dead Man Walking, A Soldiers Departure pt 2. The album concludes with The Sniper, which features dominant guitar riffs that carry the tune into oblivion. Overall there is not a bad song on Towards Death. Each song is a skull crushing thrash invasion. LEGIONS OF WAR really bring it and are worth checking out whether you are a fan of black metal or thrash metal! LEGIONS OF WAR is like a grenade ready to explode.
