KAEOS
is a relatively new black metal band on the circuit. Having formed
in December of 2007, this trio of men hails from Hamburg, Germany.
Rehearsing and recording in an old bomb shelter, this music can’t
get any darker than that. KAEOS brings to us their first
demo; a 4 song EP entitled Wolves For The Throat - Ravens
For The Eyes.
Though I am
not impressed by the first song, simply entitled I. It
sounds like a bit of a black metal mess. The recording is very
muddy, and the instruments just blend together a bit too much.
It is mid paced black metal, sounding like 3 constant notes over
and over. I’m glad when it ends and song two, The Grinding
Gears Of Time begins. It gives me a much better idea of what
KAEOS is all about. Starting out slowly, with a grim black
metal guitar riff. The song is rather doom like tempo wise. The
vocals, which are handled by both the drummer and bassist, are
raspy and deeply growled and not half bad. In fact they sound
so evil and grim they are a shining point for KAEOS. Song
three, Wolves For The Throat is necro black metal all the
way. The song structure is much better and has a few changes.
The pace is faster, the guitars are strummed faster in the traditional
black metal way. This song is most likely the best song on the
EP. If KAEOS had more songs like this, they could take
their band to a whole new level. Now we hear where the two vocalist
mix. I only wish I had a lyrics sheet, I can hear that the lyrics
are sung in English, but I can not understand quite everything.
The track immediately fades into Ravens For The Eyes. Continuing
the black metal assault, this song goes hand and hand with song
three. It should have just been kept as one long song. Then the
song ends abruptly and I am left wondering what KAEOS could
bring to the table with a full length album.
Overall, KAEOS
has put forth a fine effort with Wolves For The Throat -
Ravens For The Eyes. For having been together for just
one year, KAEOS seem to have real potential if they continue
down the path they are already on. Fans of necro black metal should
really dig this.
