So that’s
it, the new album of the Norwegians, with which “things
will make more sense to you”, as the label info is trying
to predict. It’s Black Metal on a high technical level,
with decent production and many dual guitar leads. The vocals
are rather unusual, as it’s not the ordinary shrieking known
from most others Black Metal records, but screams that sound more
like Thrash or Death Metal and that probably are meant to be very
old school. I’d preferred the usual shrieking, but okay;
let’s see the vocals as a part of CELEBRATUM’s
independent style. A matter of taste, as always. The speed is
newer slowed down which is remarkable, considering the technical
and melodic finesses that are added to the songs and compensate
for the rather monotonous riffs. Anyway, one cannot say that CELEBRATUM
create an evil or dark atmosphere, the mood on this record is
rather clinical and sick, despite the raw and dirty vocals. All
in all, Instinct is an album that doesn’t
bother or make any negative impressions, but somehow, it passes
by without having any exciting impact. Apart from that I cannot
really say (after 4 times listening to the whole CD) that anything
makes more sense to me now. But nevertheless, 7 points for the
band’s musical abilities.
